Trying for a baby can be a happy experience, however, it can become challenging, emotional and take over your life. This is something my clients talk about a lot and once one tries for a baby, over a period of time it can become an obsession and become the main focus. There are many reasons why if we try for something and nothing happens there feels like there is a block and it can become something that cannot be achieved. On a personal level I reflect on my own journey and the realisation that often the negativity around me was affecting my thinking and ability to be rational.
However, as we know the inability to conceive may not just be physiology. This is where cognitive behavioural hypnotherapy, coaching, mindfulness, Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) can help. Infertility involves other elements which include emotional and social aspects hence the importance of the mind body connection. Stress is a major cause of fertility problems. Some positive results of mind/body therapies include Dr Alice Domar (2002) in her research at the Domar Centre for Mind/Body health. She concluded that mind/body treatment can have a positive impact both in terms of increasing pregnancy rates but also reducing psychological stress. There is lots of evidence to show the positive impact of hypnotherapy with clients at different stages on their journey. According to a recent Israeli study, presented to the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology conference in Berlin by Professor Eliahu Levitas in July of 2004, hypnosis can effectively double the success of IVF treatments. The study was conducted by Professor Eliahu Levitas and his team at Soroka Hospital to determine if hypnosis could improve the success of the embryo transfers stage of IVF.
I appreciate that clients will be coming to therapy at different stages on their potential journey to conceiving. For example, having tried to conceive without any interventions, tried various medical tests and nothing conclusive and also about to embark on assisted-reproductive technology (ART) e.g. IVF and some other areas in between. My approach is solution focused, goal centred and evidence based together with offering a toolbox of coping skills for my clients. The whole notion ‘You will be happy again. Life will become joyful again. And somehow, some way, if you want to become a parent, you will.’ (Domar 2002)
I work with my clients in a number of ways and the goals for therapy might include:
- Regaining a sense of control over their life
- Feeling like they have life outside and beyond fertility issues
- Reducing stress
- Pursuing fertility treatment in control, without feeling like their life and body has been taken over by something else
- Identify beliefs that maybe causing blocks and eliminating any blocks at a conscious and subconscious level.
My role is to support all of the above goals and to also offer relaxation techniques, empower my clients, ensure my clients are aware of research and facts, help break through resistance to enjoying life and thinking positively and bring back a sense of control of what is going on. Whilst showing kindness and compassion towards themselves. My approach is utilizing a fusion of techniques and to explain, educate and empower. I am a Certified Hypnotic Fertility Practitioner.
Depending on the individual I work with clients usually for up to six sessions.
When I let go of what I am, I become what I might be.
